AnomalyCon 2016 Theme Change Announcement

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Due to feedback from various guests and attendees, AnomalyCon 2016 is shifting our theme from “Journey on the Silk Road” to “Dark Underground: Supernatural Steampunk Around the Underworld”

(Faeries, vampires, and gremlins, oh my).

We will NOT be going back on our respect costuming policy, but feel this change will make it less likely to put our guests and attendees at risk for cultural appropriation and harassment.

Let the Underworld Games begin.

AnomalyCon Needs YOU!

AnomalyCon is welcoming offers of volunteer help for staff roles throughout the organization.

AnomalyCon is an established Science Fiction, Steampunk and Alternate History convention in the Denver metro area, occurring the last weekend of March each year, with 1500 attendees in 2015.

In 2016 we have two new programs:
– A Sponsored Pass program to lower the barrier to attendance for financially challenged individuals by providing free passes
– A “Mini(on) Con” – Single day convention-before-the-convention with panel discussions and presentations, science experiments, LEGO, robots, rockets, art and writing workshops all geared for students ages 5-18, completely free to the public.

We are seeking to expand our audience and promote inclusion of traditionally under-represented populations (visibly marginalized, etc.), and so we are seeking Diversity Counsel members, especially non-white fans (Fans of Color).

We have the following positions open due to lateral transfers. This means that volunteers taking on these roles may have access to institutional knowledge:
Volunteer Staff Coordinator, Media Marketing Director, Vendor Liaison, and Contest Director.

We are also seeking volunteers for new roles:

We are seeking a Director of Diversity Oversight, whose responsibility will be to review programming descriptions, plans and schedule for sensitivity and structure conducive to community growth and outreach.

In addition, we need a Sponsored Pass coordinator to assist the Registration Director and a Mini(on)Con Lieutenant to act a second director (to report directly to the Chairwoman) as oversight for the student-oriented activities.

Expectations are unique to each role, but for each position most interaction would be performed via email, so volunteers do not have to be located in Denver. Volunteers are expected to participate in the convention itself (volunteer gifts and freebies include food during the event, tshirt and other items), and local volunteers may be eligible to have their cost of participation in other Denver-area events and conventions covered by AnomalyCon in exchange for fan table service. Those applying should have interest in one or more of the following: science fiction, fantasy, Steampunk, urban fantasy, horror, history, alternate history, science, robotics.

Specific to AnomalyCon 2016, we are seeking panelists with experience in topics relating to marginalized groups during the Industrial Revolution era—(For example, Chinese workers on the Transcontinental Railroad), the industrialization of countries along the Silk Road route from the perspective of those cultures, etc.

For additional details and to volunteer, email volunteers@anomalycon.com and direct your inquiry to Kronda Seibert.

Vendor news

We’ve crunched the numbers and calculated the space, but unfortunately all vendor spaces are full for our 2016 convention. We will release a complete list of attending vendors in August. Thank you for your understanding and we apologise at the tardiness of this announcement.

Thank you for an awesome convention!

We over at AnomalyCon are in the funny position of wrapping up the 2015 con and moving onto exciting new things for 2016.

FIRST OF ALL: thank you everybody for making 2015 the best year yet! We’ll be back at the Hyatt Denver Tech Center, over March 25-27 2016!

Even though registration is open until February 29th, 2016, the current registration price is only good until May 31st, 2015. Order early for the best deal!
